It’s hard to grasp the mindset of a society that still approves of state-sanctioned killings, especially given that the UK hasn't carried out an execution since 1948, and even more so when they have a television program called "Execution Watch." This brief documentary chronicles John Henry Ramirez’s final week; he’d been on death row for years after confessing to a murder. Now, having embraced Christianity, he is seeking a commutation of his sentence to life without parole, though this isn't directly tied to his newfound faith but rather the new district attorney’s personal reservations about capital punishment. The film includes perspectives from those who support and oppose this shift in approach, including members of the victim’s family. The presentation feels awkward and rushed, resembling a news report thrown together quickly—complete with repeated phrases and drawn-out camera shots that create an impression of artificiality rather than a genuine exploration of how people confront such intensely emotional situations. There will inevitably be arguments surrounding this ultimate punishment, but unfortunately, this film doesn’t contribute meaningfully to that conversation and is ultimately quite disheartening.
