Tilda Swinton portrays “Emma,” who abandoned her previous existence in Russia to begin anew in Milan, where she wed industrialist “Recchi” (Pippo Delbono) and raised three children. While Emma appreciates the comfort and advantages of her situation, she finds it lacking in stimulation or genuine satisfaction. Their daughter, “Elisabetta,” resides in Nice, while two sons, “Edo” (Flavio Parenti) and “Gianluca” (Mattie Zachary), live with their parents. It is the younger son's ambition to open a restaurant alongside his talented chef friend, “Antonio” (Flavio Parenti), that prompts Emma’s realization of what she has been missing, leading her into an intense relationship with him. The close proximity of the two men inevitably brings their secret to light, and a subsequent tragedy exposes the family's unpreparedness for the repercussions of Emma’s actions—including Emma herself. I consistently find Swinton's acting to be somewhat detached, and even here, during scenes depicting passionate intimacy with her lover, she failed to elevate the material; furthermore, the ending felt manufactured rather than truly resonant, failing to offer a meaningful resolution to what was otherwise a beautifully shot film. The subject matter, though potentially provocative, ultimately falls flat. I did find it enjoyable, and it’s certainly an aesthetically pleasing work from Luca Guadagnino, but its pervasive sense of hollowness left me feeling let down.
