The documentary does offer glimpses of Muhammad Ali that might be unfamiliar, like the recordings he made with his kids and conversations with people who knew him well for many years. However, it frequently feels like something put together by his own publicity team; at its worst, it serves as another platform to reinforce the idea that he was the greatest boxer, the most recognizable celebrity, a wonderful father, a loyal friend, and an important voice for social change. While he may have been the best boxer and arguably the most famous person, some of those other claims don’t quite hold up. What really struck me when considering the ninety-five minutes dedicated to celebrating his achievements and positive actions was how little time was given to moments where he expressed remorse or regret for calling Joe Frazier a gorilla and similar derogatory terms. Frazier had supported Ali both financially and in getting his boxing license back. It’s good that an apology eventually came, but most people would have simply avoided making those kinds of comments in the first place just to generate excitement around a fight or try to unsettle an opponent. Refraining from saying such things to someone who was also a friend and colleague would have been as instinctive as a skilled boxer throwing a left hook.
