A Russian admiral named Durov, portrayed by Michael Gor, develops a scheme to trigger nuclear conflict between Russia and the U.S. through the abduction of President Zakarin, played by Alexander Diachenko. This elaborate plan didn't account for the intelligence of Capt. Glass, portrayed by Gerard Butler, who is in command of the "USS Arkansas" and begins noticing that the information he’s receiving seems deliberately misleading. After uncovering indications suggesting a maritime incident wasn’t as it appeared, he launches an audacious rescue operation, quickly finding himself in perilous circumstances. The film isn't terrible as an action-adventure, but the performances are quite bad. Butler has difficulty maintaining his accent, and Gary Oldman feels entirely wrong for the role of Joint Chief Donnegan—a character who seems too inexperienced to manage even a simple task, let alone control the nation’s armed forces. The core issue is that nothing unfolds in a believable or threatening way. If this had been created seventy years ago, it could have been dismissed as propaganda from after World War II, or sixty years back as a Cold War film—but now, in 2018, it simply feels like poorly written and acted gibberish. While there are some enjoyable underwater visual effects, they’re often overshadowed by an overbearing musical score. Perhaps the concept was stronger on paper, but ultimately this is just another forgettable project for Butler that no one—including himself—is likely to recall.
