I typically dislike seeing children featured in movies, but Jon Whiteley—a Scottish actor who died earlier this year at the age of 75—was an exception to that rule. This marked his debut film alongside Dirk Bogarde; they later appeared together in "The Spanish Gardener" (1956). There's a noticeable connection between them as Bogarde plays “Chris Lloyd,” a man who has just killed his wife’s lover following a fight. With Whiteley, playing "Robbie," serving as the sole witness, Chris kidnaps him and makes an escape from the approaching police. The events that follow depict a perilous journey where an unexpected connection begins to form between them. The boy, escaping troubles of his own, gradually erodes the man’s indifference toward him, and despite himself, “Chris” develops feelings for Robbie. It's a sincere narrative with some pleasing elements; the cinematography, ranging from bleak, war-damaged London to the picturesque Scottish coastline, contributes to its sense of realism. The dialogue, though mostly understated, is well spoken in what’s primarily an effective story between just two actors. This is definitely among Dirk Bogarde's more honest and commendable performances and it’s recommended viewing.
