Hunt portrays a reimagining of South Korea’s history during a particularly bleak time. The central figures each strive to lessen the pain and loss experienced by everyday people, yet this pattern seems inescapable; efforts to stop suffering invariably result in more of it. This is because both North and South Korean governments operate under flawed, authoritarian rule. The film contains numerous disturbing depictions of brutality and torture. Because everyone involved is complicit, whether they want to be or not, it’s difficult to find any of the main characters appealing. However, you can understand their attempts to dismantle the devastating system that holds them captive. Ultimately, Hunt features strong performances, a consistently harsh and violent narrative, a brisk tempo, and a thoughtful message about the consequences of participating in a dehumanizing form of dictatorship.
