The narrative feels dated, even considering its 1999 release, yet there are several vibrant portrayals to appreciate within this depiction of angst and frustration experienced by five young adults. The focus largely rests on "Jip" (played by John Simm), who is preoccupied with his inability to perform sexually; a question arises as to whether stress prevents him from functioning properly. His closest friend, "Koop" (Shaun Parkes), doesn't share this concern, especially given his girlfriend "Nina’s" (Nicola Reynolds) boredom. Then there's "Moff" (Danny Dyer), who feels misunderstood and frustrated, and finally "Lulu" (Lorraine Pilkington), previously appearing the most mature of the group, with little interest in men or their quirks. It's a Friday afternoon, and despite being short on money, they’re planning a weekend filled with alcohol and drugs at various clubs. The start is rocky, demanding quick thinking from "Jip," but then they’re underway! Over the course of ninety minutes, we observe each character and their flaws as the plot moves toward an ending that feels somewhat foreseeable, though that's not really what matters. It's the fun journey leading up to it that provides entertainment – a crude, yet lively experience. There's a genuine quality to it, which Simm and Pilkington particularly embrace. They embody the anxieties and despair that many of us felt at that age, combined with an attitude that life is too short, and these five actors manage to convey this effectively. It does possess a subtle serious undertone – I’m certain psychologists could analyze their behavioral problems or the challenges of raising children – but this is all subtly presented within a chaotic mix of sound, music, and indulgence. There are moments of rather dramatic overacting, but overall it's an enjoyable time.
