It's not surprising, really, given what they did. The studio brought in someone known for directing primarily foreign films with an artistic bent to direct a superhero film centered on a giant green creature who destroys things when provoked. Naturally, Ang Lee was going to explore Freudian ideas, allusions to ancient Greek plays, and unconventional editing techniques. My complaints about *Hulk* mostly concern its plodding speed and the chaotic final section. The movie does come across as somewhat pretentious, but I have to give credit for the attempt and aspiration to create something different, even if it doesn’t quite work out.
