The Green Giant is coming to life! From a young age, Bruce Banner, who underwent genetic manipulation, experiences changes. Later in life, he becomes a scientist working with gamma radiation, hoping to use it as a way to heal injuries and scar tissue. An accident involving the radiation causes him to transform into the Hulk whenever he loses control. Eric Bana portrays Bruce Banner as introverted and fragile. While he seemed unsure about taking on the part, he convincingly captured Banner’s feelings of insecurity. Jennifer Connelly plays Betty Ross, embodying a calm and composed personality. She only shows compassion when she witnesses Banner's transformations. Josh Lucas takes on the role of Glen Talbot, who is completely focused on his career and comes across as self-satisfied. He wants to exploit Banner’s invention for military purposes, aiming to create super soldiers and employing any means necessary. Lucas was intended to be presented as a minor antagonist, but he doesn't quite achieve that impression. Sam Elliott plays the military commander Ross, portraying him with coolness and resolve. His primary concern is protecting his country, which motivates his defensive and patriotic actions. Although Nick Nolte has limited screen time, he delivers a particularly impactful performance. Even those few minutes are memorable. Director Ang Lee’s visual style is distinctive, and his use of split-screen imagery reflects the Marvel Comics source material, emphasizing the Hulk's comic book origins. The special effects from 2003 were decent for their time, but some imperfections are now noticeable. The animation feels somewhat dated and a little silly. The narrative also falls short in several areas; because the Hulk should be part of the MCU, humor and sarcasm are largely absent, which prevents it from fitting with the more vibrant tone of that franchise. Instead, the story is presented as a fantasy drama, making it feel rather lackluster for a comic book adaptation. The final act picks up the pace considerably, delivering a significant display of power. It's disappointing to have to wait until the very end to see the Hulk truly unleash his potential. Overall, this is a realistic depiction of the Hulk character from Marvel Comics. However, the story suffers due to its seriousness and dramatic approach!
