Paul Newman may be the name that draws people in, but it’s not his performance as the central figure that really sticks with me. Instead, I found myself most engaged by Patricia Neal's portrayal of the weary "Alma" and Brandon De Wilde’s depiction of the trusting “Lon.” The young man is the nephew of "Hud," and they all reside together on his grandfather "Homer’s" (Melvyn Douglas) cattle ranch. "Homer" is a good-hearted person, "Alma" serves as their housekeeper, and "Hud"—he simply spends his days drinking and pursuing women with an ease that has created friction between him and his father. “Lon,” meanwhile, looks up to his uncle and wants to be like him—something "Hud" is conscious of, and occasionally uses to boost his own ego. Perhaps this is at the heart of his issues; he seems incapable of genuine feeling, whether toward himself, those he’s involved with, or his family – a portrayal that Newman executes effectively, without adding even a trace of sadness or remorse to the role. When disease threatens the cattle herd, attention shifts to their troubled family dynamic, forcing "Hud" to confront what's truly important. But is it too late? De Wilde seems to be the audience’s entry point into the story. Through his eyes, we witness the behavior of those around him swing from kindness and affection to aggression and indifference. It’s his inherently innocent nature that underscores the positive and negative qualities in others, and by the end, I almost felt compassion for Newman's strikingly lonely character. I initially believed it would be difficult to dislike a character played by someone as generally appealing as Newman, but this performance made it surprisingly easy—a clear demonstration of his range. Neal’s role is relatively small, yet her character comes across as strong and resolute, somewhat fragile but ultimately aware of the shortcomings in a man she simply couldn't fully trust. As we uncover more about their past, perhaps some understanding arises for the errant cowboy. Or maybe not.
