This is without a doubt my top pick among Miyazaki’s films. While the animation has a slightly unusual feel, it presents this narrative about a young woman afflicted by a witch's curse in a vibrant and fashionable way. Overcome with sadness, she leaves home without any clear plan and stumbles upon "Howl" and his mobile castle – along with the creature "Calcifer." A period of self-exploration begins for her, perhaps even more than anything else. “Howl,” who embodies complete independence, is also contending with personal struggles he’s attempting to resolve. "Calcifer" acts as a link that allows them to gain insight into one another and provides much of the film's comedic moments while they try to undo the magic holding them captive. The story resonates on numerous levels, and each time I watch it, I notice something new.
