Reno on How to Train Your Dragon 2

8/10 · May 3, 2015

I mentioned a while back, during my review of 'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2', that the title was awkward for a sequel. Even Neil Patrick Harris pointed this out at the Oscars in 2015. However, online, even small alterations to a title can cause chaos. The computer and internet don't display things sequentially, so changes can get lost among many other titles if they modify the first word of a sequel’s name. They aren’t as clueless as some people assume, which is why they emphasized 'Dragon' more prominently than the rest of the words. This second installment didn't stray far from the original. The story picks up five years after Hiccup healed from his injury. He and Toothless find a new territory while charting maps, and their adventure begins, but quickly leads to problems that require everyone in their town to participate and confront an increasing threat attempting to take over. As I often say, those days are gone; animated films are now made for audiences of all ages. The script was well-crafted and thoughtful, and it didn't disappoint. It came very close to the impact of the first film, but because of its straightforwardness, it fell a little short. It had good development with some suspense, excitement, and entertainment value. We couldn’t have asked for anything more; it’s an ideal continuation, and I'm looking forward to seeing what they explore in future installments. The four-year break between movies seems like a smart idea and gives the franchise’s fans some time to breathe. Animation enthusiasts should definitely see this movie, particularly if you enjoyed the first one—don’t miss it. 8/10
