The film, beginning with the impression of a modestly produced drama, transitions into a science fiction piece that incorporates impressive visual effects, demonstrating the potential of its roughly $20 million production budget. However, it isn’t perfect. Theo James appears detached as “Will” in this story set after the world has ended – one wonders if he developed a sense of who his character was before filming began. His performance feels flat; there's little to his portrayal, and he doesn't come across as someone desperately trying to rescue his soon-to-be wife. Forest Whitaker is recognizable in his role as “Tom,” the goateed man who accompanies Will on a quest to locate Samantha, Tom’s daughter. Whitaker elevates several moments that otherwise would have felt empty, although the writing itself holds him back with its unremarkable lines. The movie feels like a shorter project stretched out to feature-length. Some segments could have been removed or trimmed down to improve the film's rhythm. A tighter runtime of ninety minutes, instead of the actual one hour and fifty-three minutes, would likely have made it more impactful. Perhaps Netflix favors longer content—the assumption being that extended programming keeps viewers streaming and benefits investors.
