It’s a really enjoyable horror-comedy from New Zealand. Horror movies often set themselves up for failure because people expect them to be frightening, and that’s a lot of pressure on the filmmakers. It gets even harder when you add comedy into the mix. You don't frequently hear people say they were completely happy with this kind of movie, but I was pleasantly surprised by it. The film was written and directed by someone new to the scene, which is great. I didn’t recognize any of the actors, but everyone seemed fantastic. The lead actress stood out; she was incredibly good—I really liked her, and she reminded me a bit of Nia Vardalos from 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding,' especially in her expressions. The plot felt familiar at times, with elements that brought to mind the recent film 'The Boy', as well as other nods to different movies. But I didn’t let that bother me because it still managed to feel original. The way the story unfolded really helped make the movie work and the suspense was definitely worth the anticipation built up early on. It's about a woman who doesn’t scare easily, who finally confronts her greatest fear when she returns to her childhood home, only to find out that the house is haunted by strange occurrences and eventually a showdown with whatever force resides there. The setting was fantastic, along with the strong performances, and it kept me engaged throughout. The humor came in the form of dark comedy. The story takes unexpected turns, shifting the film’s direction at certain points, which leaves you wondering how well it fits into its genre. I don't think most viewers will care about that though, because they’ll just be entertained and eager to see the exciting ending. I hope there isn’t a sequel, because this standalone movie was one of the best coming from New Zealand, and I wouldn’t want it spoiled like so many films are in Hollywood. It's worth watching even if you don’t think it deserves my rating. _7/10_
