It’s encouraging to see more movies set in the nineties, and ideally, they'd all feature Timothée Chalamet alongside Maika Monroe—their presence is captivating in Hot Summer Nights. The film initially feels somewhat disorganized, with an uneven tone and occasional echoes of Scorsese or P.T. Anderson. However, if one chooses to draw inspiration, it’s best to learn from the very best filmmakers. A noteworthy soundtrack accompanies the story, and the narrative takes a surprisingly dark turn, concluding on a mysterious and somber note. These unexpected aspects, along with an underlying sense of substance, make Hot Summer Nights an enjoyable way to spend a summer afternoon. The movie simply wouldn't exist without the compelling connection between Chalamet and Monroe, and their performances are genuinely appealing. Recognition is also due for the film’s soundtrack.
