The narrative builds to a significant point in its final moments, and Fiona Shaw delivers commendable work occasionally, yet I found myself largely perplexed by this rather superficial story. Rose (Shaw) has been unable to walk for nearly two decades and secured a loan against her home to pay for treatment at a specialized facility overseen by Gomez (Vincent Perez). Her daughter, Sophia (Emma Mackey), while clearly devoted to her mother, seems weary of the responsibility of being her full-time caretaker. It doesn’t take long to grasp some understanding of the older woman's situation, but that isn't really central to what this is about. The focus shifts more toward Sophia and her connection with Ingrid (Vicky Krieps), whose mysterious demeanor both captivates and frustrates her, especially when Matty (Yang Gael) arrives to further complicate matters which already feel quite muddled. With this unengaging situation unfolding slowly and Shaw seeming mostly preoccupied with expressing dissatisfaction, we’re essentially left to construct our own understanding of what's truly happening, and then, at least for me, question why I should be invested either way. The writing team seems to have struggled with Ingrid’s characterization, and despite the beautiful Greek beach setting, I couldn’t connect with it. There was a noticeable effort put into the production values, but it would probably be acceptable viewing on television during a cold evening. It's not particularly exciting; more lukewarm than anything else.
