I've become numb to violence; doing something repeatedly makes you get used to it. Hostiles is directed by Scott Cooper, who also adapted the screenplay from a story by Donald E. Stewart. The film stars Christian Bale, Rosamund Pike, Wes Studi, Rory Cochrane, John Benjamin Hickey, Jeremiah Wilks, and Jesse Plemons. Max Richter composed the music, and Masanobu Takayanagi was in charge of cinematography. The movie takes place in 1892 and follows legendary Capt. Joseph J. Blocker (Bale), who is forced to escort his former Cheyenne adversary, Chief Yellow Hawk (Studi), and his family through dangerous territory. Their destination is the Cheyenne tribal lands in Montana, where Yellow Hawk hopes to die peacefully. What’s become of the Western genre? Fortunately for those who appreciate it, there are filmmakers willing to engage with this tradition and offer something fresh for new audiences. Scott Cooper is one such director, and he has openly stated that Hostiles represents his vision for a better world—or at least a greater understanding between cultures. A Western, using the Indian Wars as its backdrop, seemed like an ideal vehicle for expressing this sentiment. Hostiles immediately grabs your attention with shocking violence. Initially, Cooper and his team might face criticism for presenting what seems to be a one-sided perspective, but there is more to the story. The film quickly shifts focus, showing that both sides of this conflict have suffered. A tense meeting back at Fort Berringer, where Captain Blocker receives unwelcome orders, highlights the brutal reality of the situation. From there, the journey begins—a group of wounded individuals who must contend with threats from outside and within themselves. The filmmakers didn’t take any shortcuts in developing the characters; their emotional journeys are among the film's strongest points (and the cast delivers superb, authentic performances). The pacing is also deliberate, allowing the characters room to develop and amplifying the impact of action sequences while providing opportunities to appreciate the beautiful landscapes (filmed in New Mexico/Arizona) and enjoy the classic feel of an outdoor Western. It’s refreshing to hear a musical score that doesn't overwhelm important scenes, which contributes to the film’s overall technical quality. However, there are some flaws. Ben Foster appears as Philip Wills, a volatile character who is so compelling that his limited screen time feels like a missed opportunity, since he merely reinforces what we already know about Blocker from the beginning. A pivotal plot development also leaves a somewhat disappointing feeling—not enough to ruin the film, but it could have been handled differently, especially considering Cooper’s intention to present both sides of the story. Despite these shortcomings, Hostiles is a true pleasure for Western fans. Like modern classics such as Dances With Wolves and Unforgiven, it combines a contemporary sensibility with traditional themes of maturity and consequence. The film earns a rating of 9/10.
