“Hostiles,” which appeared near the end of 2017, comes from writer and director Scott Cooper and features Christian Bale as a well-known Army captain tasked with guiding a terminally ill chief (Wes Studi) and his family from New Mexico to Montana in 1892. He’s compelled to do so against his better judgment. Rosamund Pike portrays a woman who has lost loved ones, whom the group encounters during their journey. Rory Cochrane is Sgt. Metz, and Jonathan Majors plays Corp. Woodsen. The film gets off to an impressive start, and the Western "road movie" concept seemed promising; however, certain aspects felt forced or improbable—like the sequence involving the fur trappers—and others were overly dramatic, such as Sgt. Metz’s apology during a rainstorm. The overall tone is one of persistent bleakness. Despite this, there are moments that work well, though they don't appear often enough. I had anticipated a truly exceptional Western based on its strong beginning, but it didn’t quite live up to expectations; the screenplay really needed some revisions. The movie has a running time of 2 hours and 14 minutes and was filmed in New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado. Donald E. Stewart contributed additional writing. GRADE: C/C- (4.5/10)
