This movie is just as bizarre as a Dundee Cake, but that’s what makes it such an enjoyable horror film. With Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing playing a pair of sophisticated men battling evil, the picture feels secure in their capable hands. As the name implies, the story unfolds on a train—specifically, the Trans-Siberian Express. Anthropologist Prof. Sir Alexander Saxton (Lee) has unearthed a creature from his mountain explorations and is transporting it under lock and key during the journey. Of course, things don’t go as planned! Soon, gruesome deaths begin to occur, forcing Saxton and Dr. Wells (Cushing) to figure out what the beast is and how to stop it—if that's even possible. It’s a really nice blend of films like And Then There Were None and The Thing from Another World. Even though it can sometimes look inexpensive, the small budget actually adds to its charm as a “B” movie rather than detracting from it. Telly Savalas’ appearance later on seems odd, and he certainly overacts, but there's still something appealing about it all, especially when the blood flows and eyeballs pop out. The explanation of the creature and how it works—the science behind it—is surprisingly clever and doesn’t talk down to viewers despite the overall craziness. It's a lot of fun, so grab a ticket and hop aboard. 7.5/10
