I went in with really low expectations, but the film exceeded them considerably. My initial reaction after watching was simply, "wow." It makes me wonder how I hadn’t discovered this sooner; it’s easily the best dark-fantasy movie I've seen lately. Before seeing it, though, I worried it would feel like 'Tusk,' which I found quite unsettling. Ultimately, what’s the distinction between a tusk and a horn? They both appear in pairs on animals for protection. My interest waned during that film, and now I regret letting that happen. It was a pretty frivolous reason to pass it up, really. The cast is primarily British, with Daniel Radcliffe and Juno Temple among them; I initially assumed it was a UK production. However, it turned out to be a joint Canadian-US project, based on a book of the same name and directed by the filmmaker behind 'Mirror.' The narrative was compelling, even if not entirely realistic, and explored its themes effectively. The storytelling shifted frequently, which helped tighten the plot as it approached its end. This might be Radcliffe’s strongest performance since leaving the ‘Harry Potter’ series. I don't see him as a typical pretty-boy actor, but this type of role is really well-suited to his talents. Perhaps he should build up some muscle for similar roles in the future, though his height could present a challenge. The film was shot entirely in Canada, and the cinematography was excellent; the music and acting were also impressive. Even the settings—the woods, the treehouse—have a damp English or Scottish feel that’s perfect for a movie about mythical characters with devilish qualities. I'm sorry I waited so long to review it, but now it’s done, and I hope you check it out soon if you haven't already. 7/10
