Crossing into Texas carries inherent risks; you're stepping into Zona Libre. Horizons West, directed by Budd Boetticher and featuring a story by Louis Stevens, features Robert Ryan, Rock Hudson, Julia Adams, John McIntire, Raymond Burr, and Dennis Weaver. It’s presented in Technicolor with Charles P. Boyle handling the cinematography. The film is set after the Civil War, as the Hammond brothers, Neal (Hudson) and Dan (Ryan), return to their family's ranch in Texas. While Neal seems content with working on the land, Dan has bigger ambitions. However, his intentions change following a meeting with Cord Hardin (Burr), which leads him down an unlawful path. This shift creates a rift within the Hammond family, especially since Neal chooses to become a Marshal for Austin and wear a badge himself. This is a diverting early Western from Budd Boetticher that stands out due to its psychological elements, placing it above many others. The themes of greed and conflict within a family are familiar territory in Westerns, but Boetticher and the actors bring conviction to their portrayal, especially Ryan, who was enjoying a strong period of work including films like On Dangerous Ground, Beware, My Lovely, and The Naked Spur. While the characters aren't deeply complex, they’re well-developed, and the ending demonstrates a sense of purpose. Rosemary Odell’s costume design is also noteworthy, with Adams looking particularly striking thanks to it. Some reservations arise from needing to accept that Ryan and Hudson are portrayed as brothers, and that McIntire plays Ryan’s father (given their relatively close ages in reality). The outdoor photography isn't especially memorable, although the town set designs by Russell A. Gausman & Joseph Kish are pleasing to look at. It makes for a perfectly acceptable way to spend some time if you appreciate Western films. 6/10
