John Chard on Hopscotch

· Jun 14, 2020

A truly wonderful, small film. Following disillusionment with his career, CIA agent Miles Kendig resolves to leave the agency entirely. Concerned that his safety, or even his existence, might be at risk because of them, he informs them that unless they allow him to simply walk away, he will reveal all the sensitive information he possesses. The organization dismisses this as bluster, assuming he’s just venting bitterness, so he begins sending them portions of his manuscript, one chapter at a time. Recognizing Kendig's sincerity, the CIA attempts to silence him by any means possible. However, given that Kendig was once part of their ranks, he is quite perceptive, and preventing him from doing what he intends will be difficult. Adapted from Brian Garfield’s novel, Hopscotch is a playful comedy handled with flawless timing by director Ronald Neame. With a talented ensemble cast—Walter Matthau, Glenda Jackson, Herbert Lom, Ned Beatty & Sam Waterston—Hopscotch depends on clever writing and very agreeable dialogue to succeed, which it does quite well. It's the kind of movie that isn’t striving for accolades; instead, it’s an actor’s film, where everyone seems at ease with their roles and genuinely happy to be involved. The central role of Kendig is perfectly suited to Matthau, who moves deliberately, a twinkle in his eye and a witty remark always ready, effortlessly carrying the movie. While the others all provide valuable contributions, the comedic highlights originate with Walter and that expressive face of his. So there are moments of drama mixed with comedy, Hopscotch is a skillfully crafted and thoroughly enjoyable film, and I suggest you see it. 7/10
