Homunculus is an unsettling psychological thriller that manages to be both visually striking and deeply affecting, thanks in part to solid acting and a distinctive premise centered around experimental brain surgery. The movie certainly provides surprising developments in the storyline and begins with considerable interest, but it doesn't fully develop some key aspects of the narrative—like how the enigmatic homeless man impacts Nokoshi, or why Ito is so fixated on him. Those who haven’t read the original manga might find these omissions puzzling, though the film still offers a stimulating experience characterized by an unusual and unsettling mood.
