It's remarkable how everyday experiences can unfold unexpectedly. This collection of 16 short films by Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duplat is an amusing assortment of comedic scenes showcasing just how humorous those situations can be. Each segment includes performances from Guillermo Francella, who portrays a diverse set of characters with skill, displaying a wide variety of roles that fit the different stories he’s in. The narratives themselves also differ considerably, presenting characters and storylines that examine various facets of modern Argentinian life (mostly through a male viewpoint), encompassing situations that are absurd, beautiful, pessimistic, witty, mocking, pretentious, conceited, good-hearted, and everything else imaginable. It's true that the quality isn’t consistent throughout, but aside from one overly dramatic segment that feels misplaced, the other 15 segments all succeed in providing entertainment, offering laughs of different sizes—all of them pleasant to watch. Most run like comedy sketches, though a few are just longer jokes (and these happen to be some of the strongest parts). In this way, the film is similar to another Argentinian compilation, the Oscar-nominated “Wild Tales” (“Relatos salvajes”) (2014), but in smaller portions and with a more approachable tone. I’ll admit that initially, I had doubts about "Homo Sapiens?” after seeing its trailer, which really doesn't capture what the film is like, making some of the segments appear like poor sketches from “The Benny Hill Show” (1969-1989). Fortunately, those concerns were put to rest once I saw the complete movie. It’s not wildly boisterous, but it’s definitely enjoyable, and that's something most people appreciate.
