The film takes place in the fictional North African country of "Numia," during a coup, and centers on “Zong” (Yi Zhang) and “Cheng Lang” (Karry Wang), who are working at the Chinese embassy located in the nation’s capital. They become aware that a group of people are stuck in a distant desert area and are assigned to help them reach safety across the border into "Tulisia." The older man has experience with rescue operations, recalling a past mission he undertook in Lebanon, while his younger counterpart is eager but inexperienced. As they attempt to guide their charges to safety, they have to build trust while navigating numerous dangers that threaten everyone involved. The film’s length—exceeding two and a quarter hours—is excessive, and despite moments of excitement, the plot relies too heavily on coincidences, which diminishes the sense of real danger. The younger actor delivers an acceptable performance as his character struggles with wanting to reveal the full scope of their situation versus his superior's more practical approach; however, the other characters feel generic, embodying traits like bravery and dedication but lacking depth or individuality. Despite being surrounded by explosions and gunfire (the special effects are convincingly realistic), the film feels detached and mechanical. Those interested in themes of surveillance may find something to appreciate towards the conclusion, but otherwise, it resembles a vehicle for Bruce Willis. There also seems to be an endless supply of buses and bottled water throughout the story... It’s marginally worth seeing, perhaps no worse than comparable American movies, but ultimately unremarkable.
