This comedy/drama with Eddie Murphy, Jeff Goldblum, and Kelly Preston feels meandering but has a spiritual quality. A peculiar man named G (Eddie Murphy) develops a friendship with the manager of a struggling shopping network (Jeff Goldblum) and his coworker (Kelly Preston), both located in Miami. His presence quickly becomes an oddity on the network. “Holy Man” (1998) seems to blend aspects of “Michael” (1996) and “City of Angels” (1998) into something new, and it’s easy to see how it influenced “Bruce Almighty” (2003). It didn't do well in theaters because audiences likely expected a standard Eddie Murphy movie, but that’s not what they got. There are moments intended to be funny, but they’re subtle; I’d say there were just a couple of instances where I genuinely laughed out loud. Instead, it’s more of an amusing drama mixed with a spiritual documentary style, and this unusual feel probably alienated viewers. Even though it's not as good as those other films, it has its own charm once you adjust to the pace. The movie feels longer than it needs to be and could have benefited from some editing. Nevertheless, there are things to appreciate; Murphy is completely believable in his role, and his character is definitely captivating (it’s pretty clear who he truly is), plus the film offers a few worthwhile observations. The running time is 1 hour, 54 minutes, and filming took place in Miami, Florida. GRADE: C+/B-
