Wuchak on Hollywoodland

On June 16, 1959, George Reeves, who played Superman in the television series "Adventures of Superman" from 1952 to 1958 (portrayed here by Ben Affleck), was discovered dead in his Los Angeles home, having suffered a gunshot wound to the head. The official ruling declared it a suicide; however, Reeves’ mother engaged a private investigator (played by Adrien Brody) to look into whether he might have been murdered. While there were suggestions that Reeves may have taken his own life due to feeling stuck playing the same role and concerns about getting older, several people had reasons and opportunities to want him gone, including an ex-girlfriend, Toni Mannix (Diane Lane), and her husband, who was a manager at MGM (Bob Hoskins). Another person of interest was Reeves’s fiancée (Robin Tunney). A significant question that remains is why the other three people present when Reeves died waited forty-five minutes before contacting the police. "Hollywoodland" (2006) can be described as a crime drama in the neo-noir style, and it also functions as a sad biographical film similar to "Auto Focus" (2002), “Mommie Dearest” (1981), and “Changeling” (2008). The only invented character is Brody’s detective, though he's inspired by the real Milo Speriglio. The movie presents three different explanations for Reeves’ death, subtly suggesting that one possibility is more probable than others. Ultimately, it starts as a puzzle and concludes without providing definitive answers, which I believe works well given that the truth of what occurred remains unknown. Regardless, this feels like an appropriate remembrance of Reeves and his experiences in Hollywood during the 1950s. It’s worth looking into the actual case after seeing the film. Caroline Dhavernas also appears as the detective's girlfriend, and Molly Parker plays his former partner. The movie has a runtime of 2 hours and 6 minutes and was filmed in Los Angeles and the Toronto area. GRADE: B
