The movie concludes with unrestrained happiness. Malcolm Smith has a passion for films, particularly Anita Ekberg. Acting on a hunch, he purchases several raffle tickets hoping to win a car. He does, but so does Steve Wiley, a gambler who, unsurprisingly, won through dishonest means. When the promotion refuses to award two cars, the men are told they must share one, much to Steve’s frustration as he has debts to settle. So, with a cunning plan, he agrees to drive with Malcolm toward Hollywood, intending to abandon him at the first opportunity. However, he didn't anticipate Mr. Bascom, Malcolm's Great Dane who is also along for the trip, or an encounter with the attractive Terry Roberts. It’s clear this won’t be a typical road movie experience. Considering their relationship was strained during this period (this marked their final collaboration), it’s surprising to discover that Hollywood Or Bust stands among the best films featuring Dean Martin (Steve) and Jerry Lewis (Malcolm). The elements that made the duo so beloved are present, even incorporating a satirical look at the challenges of Hollywood. Director Frank Tashlin deserves considerable praise; he also directed Artists & Models, often considered the pinnacle of their careers. Tashlin maintains a lively pace, guiding the pair in a direction practically guaranteed to succeed. The humor occasionally feels immature, and Dean predictably sings and attempts to charm the female lead (Pat Crowley as Terry), but it possesses an undeniable sense of joy, similar to Artists & Models, that can genuinely improve your mood. Memorable songs from the Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster score include "A Day in the Country" and "It Looks Like Love," while you’re likely to laugh at Mr. Bascom's antics and Lewis’s boundless energy, especially during a particular movie spoof. Anita Ekberg eventually joins the fun, just as chaotic events are about to unfold. If the idea of a Great Dane driving a car doesn't amuse you, this film probably isn't for you. But that would be a missed opportunity because it is a charming and spirited film deserving of renewed attention from those who tend to be critical, as it’s sure to lift your spirits. 8/10
