The special effects are remarkable considering when the film was made, and the central idea is neat, even if it’s been done before. What really stands out about _Hollow Man_, though, is the way it subverts the typical hero's path—or rather, its complete lack. It’s more like a descent than anything else. I wouldn’t even call it a villain’s journey, exactly. The film makes it obvious who the antagonist is by the time the credits roll, but what’s fascinating isn’t that he changes, but that his true nature is simply unveiled. He progresses to become the kind of unpleasant person he always had the potential to be, if only he possessed the means to do so. Initially, he embodies a very familiar protagonist type—the sort we've seen countless times in films spanning many years, and still see today. This character is usually embraced! People will say things like, "Yes, he’s a little mischievous, but that’s what makes him appealing." It’s unsettling to consider how close this archetype comes to being something negative, and I suspect that's the film's purpose. _Final rating:★★★ - I liked it.
