The impact of a project can be remarkable when accountability is removed. This film was what prompted director Paul Verhoeven’s decision to depart from Hollywood and pause his filmmaking career. He felt that another director could have easily produced Hollow Man, a movie centered on significant effects that proved commercially successful. This is the primary shortcoming of the film: it doesn't possess the same sharp wit or biting satire, nor even the provocative sexuality—whether conventional or unconventional—that frequently characterizes his work. However, setting aside any anticipation for a quintessential Verhoeven creation and accepting the disappointment of its squandered possibilities, as it essentially devolves into a predictable haunted house thriller, it manages to be an adequately entertaining popcorn movie with considerable energy. It’s immediately apparent that viewers are about to witness a spectacle of special effects; the opening credits are striking, blending science fiction elements with sensuality, and the initial sequence forcefully captures—and also ensnares—both the audience and a small animal. Following this, audiences are presented with top-tier visual effects and inventive methods for revealing the unseen Sebastian Caine (Kevin Bacon) to both viewers and his intended victims. Regrettably, the acting performances across the board are quite uniform, portraying a collection of science fiction archetypes. Everyone involved has demonstrated greater talent in other roles, but their presence undoubtedly draws audiences into theaters; ultimately, this functions as a movie designed to stimulate and impress the senses—though not necessarily the intellect. 6.5/10
