Janet Leigh brings charm to her part, positioned between the predictable yet dependable lawyer "Carl" (played by Wendell Corey) and the somewhat mysterious "Mason" (Robert Mitchum). The story begins when her character, "Connie," hired as a contemporary version of a secret evaluator, is exposed in a store. A salesperson, rather than reporting her, remains silent and loses his job because of it. They go out on a date, he encounters her young son "Timmy" (Gordon Gebert), and she finds herself with another man in her life. The movie explores her conflict between security and uncertainty, and also touches upon her personality—she’s previously been widowed and hesitant to commit again. For me, the most memorable aspect is the performance of the young boy. He's a natural on screen, interacting effectively with two seasoned actors in a way that I found particularly captivating. The final moments are carried by him, quietly presenting the resolution that we probably figured out long before. While the conclusion felt a little hasty to me, a brief scene featuring an astonished police lieutenant Harry Morgan and some playful interaction with a train set elevate this above your typical Christmas movie offering.
