It felt like the clergyman was simply adjusting his voice during the Christening, but regardless, author "Ohm" (Adam Scott) finds himself on the verge of finishing the final book in his celebrated “Conquistador” series when a memory surfaces: his parents’ ashes are still stored in a cupboard, next to a picture of his mother posed against an enormous tree. He resolves that the ideal location for their remains is beneath that very tree and embarks on a journey to Ireland and a secluded country hotel. His arrival immediately establishes how unusual this establishment truly is, and the fact that he seems somewhat irritable hints that the trip won't proceed smoothly. However, that was merely the beginning, as Fiona (Florence Ordesh), who works behind the bar, steps in at just the right moment, initiating a series of events involving her vanishing, a deceased goat, a crossbow, a locked suite for newlyweds, an odd wanderer (David Wilmot), and a remarkably active dumbwaiter. Naturally, the woodland environment contributes significantly to building suspense, with the sound of the wind being particularly effective, alongside some muted—though believable—shadowy lighting. The hotel does seem more complex than Churchill’s War rooms, and the plot isn't entirely free from inconsistencies; still, I thought Scott (who brought David Tennant to mind) managed to keep things on track as his character’s present situation is intertwined with a historical one that explains some of the reasons why his parents were kept in the wardrobe for so long and why he's so restless. The direction maintains a sense of tension, there’s a touch of humor mixed within the fun, and this is definitely among the strongest cinema releases in its category this year.
