It’s curious to wonder what became of Omri Katz. He plays the adolescent “Max,” who with his sister, “Dani” (played by Thora Birch), relocates to the quaint, historically significant town of Salem. Shortly after arriving, he develops a crush on "Allison" (Vinessa Shaw). While out collecting Halloween treats with his sister, they visit her family’s rather elegant home, where they talk about the notorious “Sanderson” witches who were executed there three centuries prior. Apparently, the house has been transformed into a museum, so all three go to this rundown building when "Max" commits an error – he ignites the incorrect candle and suddenly, these three malevolent women reappear. Headed by "Winifred" (Bette Midler), they need to employ a concealed potion to steal the youth of every child in order to regain it for themselves and achieve everlasting beauty. Luckily, our courageous (and increasingly affectionate) group has one supporter from the past: a cat—formerly “Thackery,” who was penalized by these very same witches long ago. Will their combined efforts be able to stop the witches’ evil scheme? It's genuinely delightful – with Ms. Midler performing exceptionally well and being ably supported by Sarah Jessica Parker, although Kathy Najimy feels somewhat underutilized. There's also a single entertaining musical sequence—naturally, "I Put a Spell on You." The visual effects have more of a Hammer Films feel than anything from ILM, but that simply enhances the unusual, almost theatrical quality of the entertainment as the story concludes in a humorous way at the graveyard. Three decades later, it remains a distinctive and entertaining family film that had me trying to remember where I’d seen “Thackery” (Sean Murray) before.
