It’s a movie loaded with action, though starring performers who aren't exactly household names. This is the second attempt, essentially a restart following the 2007 film’s disappointing reception. It really should have become a series by now, spanning at least three or four installments. It’s obvious that something isn't quite right with it. While this particular movie didn't perform terribly at the box office, that still counts as a letdown for an action film of its kind. The director is new to directing and the writers have experience, so you would think things would be better. The budget seemed justified; the production values are impressive, so what’s holding it back? My initial concern is with the casting. A bigger star could have drawn audiences into theaters. Jason Statham might have been a good choice, especially considering Paul Walter's passing, who was originally intended to play the lead. I won’t say Rupert Friend didn’t do a fine job stepping in, but there’s just no real star power attached to this project, particularly when you consider international markets where these actors are unknown. Another problem is that it received an R rating, which seems unnecessary. There's nothing romantic or overtly suggestive about it—no intimate scenes, revealing clothing, or drug use—just violence and gore, mostly created with CGI. It’s hard to believe what films have become recently. I did enjoy the action sequences, so I can't give it a negative review, but they weren’t enough for me to recommend it either. The plot is acceptable, told at a brisk pace. Overall, it’s an average film. I’ve never seen Singapore portrayed so well on screen before. It’s fine for casual viewing and the stunts, or if you have nothing else to watch. 6/10
