Rayan Sarlak is the standout performer in what turns out to be a fairly ordinary narrative centered around a family’s car journey. The film portrays a group traveling together, arguing, disagreeing, and generally annoying one another. Only the older son (Amin Simiar) seems to want to avoid the constant commotion that fills their drive across the Iranian landscape. For my part, I honestly found the whole experience rather frustrating. It could be argued that this reflects the director Panah Panahi’s ability to observe realistically, and also the actors' success in portraying a family road trip that would genuinely terrify me. A sick dog further complicates matters, pushing the situation into feeling overly manufactured for my taste, and the impression lingered. Still, Sarlak is captivating and pleasant to watch, and there are moments when his interactions with his father (Hassan Madjooni) – who has a keyboard drawn on his cast – provide some amusement; but mostly I struggled to connect with it. The acting is solid, and the plot moves along quickly, yet it felt longer than its 90-minute runtime because the story attempts to cover too many different subjects. It’s possible I simply wasn't in the right frame of mind, but eventually it became tiresome, not just for each other, but for me as well.
