Glen Powell seems poised to reimburse Tom Cruise for those flying lessons remarkably fast! In this film, he portrays Gary, an endearingly awkward philosophy professor who occasionally lends his skills to the police department with criminal profiling. After Investigator Jasper (Austin Amelio) oversteps and faces suspension, Gary is brought in unexpectedly and turns out to be quite skilled at coaxing confessions from individuals plotting to eliminate their loved ones for a five-thousand-dollar fee. As he handles more of these cases, his abilities improve; he finds enjoyment in the disguises and grows increasingly clever at adopting various personas. The situation becomes complicated when Maddy (Adria Arjona) asks him to take care of her brutish husband, Ray (Evan Holtzman). Gary develops feelings for her and persuades her to abandon her scheme. Soon they begin a relationship—a development that greatly benefits the sidelined Jasper. When Ray turns up dead, Jasper is convinced he knows precisely who was responsible and how best to seek retribution... It’s a rather diverting romantic thriller, offering Powell a chance to captivate audiences across nearly two hours of cinema that feels breezy, utterly ridiculous, but inspired by a real person. Arjona appears to be enjoying herself as well—and the final twenty minutes are genuinely amusing. It's unlikely to earn any BAFTA recognition, though; it’s simply pleasant entertainment for the summer months.
