CinemaSerf on His New Job

5/10 · Jun 6, 2022

The film opens with Charlie Chaplin arriving at the "Lockstone" studios hoping to find work—they even have a water cooler! He's willing to take on any job, which is fortunate because every assignment the director gives him ends in disaster. It’s amusing initially; the comedy feels remarkably well-timed and precise, but despite introducing some new characters meant to enhance his humor—the female lead, her male counterpart, and a construction worker just trying to finish the sets—it quickly becomes rather repetitive. There's a limit to how many times one can get away with poking someone with a sword or stick, or hitting them with a plank, before the act feels commonplace. The film does highlight Chaplin’s physical abilities, but like most slapstick comedy, it lacks any nuance that might keep the humor engaging and original.
