I would generally consider Hinterland to be a fictional piece, yet it manages to portray the feeling of the Austro-Hungarian empire falling apart after World War I and Austria’s shift toward a modern state, and that's done exceptionally well. It's a crime drama with unusual elements and Gothic influences, carrying a clear message against war. The acting is excellent; many of the performers seem recognizable from shows like Babylon Berlin. The only real drawback might be a brief moment where it feels out of place with modern sensibilities, but that’s easily ignored because, otherwise, this is an outstanding production. 10/10
