This feels like another addition to that difficult category of movies centered on troubled families, often associated with Oprah's book club selections. The problems span across multiple family members, providing ample opportunity to depict poor parenting decisions and uncomfortable situations reminiscent of reality television. While competently made—as one would anticipate given Ron Howard’s involvement—I find this kind of story hard to take and struggled to get through it. A small comfort was the bond between the brother and sister, who seemed to offer some stability amidst the chaotic behavior of their mother and grandmother. The film concludes by presenting the actual individuals portrayed, and I noticed how much effort went into having the actors look like them. However, the home movies included only happy occasions, since documenting truly difficult experiences didn’t become common until platforms like YouTube emerged. These upbeat clips served to soften the suffering and dysfunction that the movie painstakingly explored over its runtime.
