Lourenço (Marco Pigossi) traveled from Brazil hoping to reunite with his boyfriend, but was abandoned when that man left without any communication, leaving him alone. Now he faces the possibility of having to leave Provincetown, a place welcoming to gay people, and returning home to live with his deeply religious mother, someone who doesn’t know he is gay. He earns a living working for Bob (Sean Mahon), who isn't always reliable, cleaning vacation rentals and lives in a small house in the yard of Scott (Bill Irwin), a man recently widowed who sees himself as a potential father figure to his tenant. As his tourist visa nears its end, Lourenço feels lost until he meets Maurice (James Bland) on the beach. They connect immediately and after a tender courtship become intimate both physically and emotionally. However, Maurice is a nurse from New York with only a week left before starting a job in Angola, so what does that mean for any lasting relationship? Will this be just a brief escape for one or both of them? The film has an appealing visual style, occasionally bringing to mind "The Whales of August" (1987) as the seaside town enters its off-season, but the narrative feels somewhat thin. Lourenço is a character with much potential; he’s attractive and therefore often sought after by older men, yet also vulnerable and struggling internally. He desires stability, love, and belonging, but first needs to confront some personal issues—and that's where the film plays it safe, following familiar paths, especially for those who have seen gay cinema from Argentina or Brazil that explores how social and religious beliefs about being gay intersect with the inner turmoil of a lost protagonist. Pigossi’s performance is quite compelling, but I found Bland to be unremarkable, and the older, flamboyant characters felt too conveniently inserted to flesh out the story. It's an undemanding film, visually pleasing, but ultimately lacking in depth.
