The chance to be openly who you are can feel wonderful and freeing, particularly for people who've spent years concealing themselves from disapproving families and a judgmental world. This is true for Lourenço (Marco Pigossi), a Brazilian man hoping to settle permanently in Provincetown, Massachusetts—a plan that depends on getting a work visa before his tourist one expires. He has another reason to pursue this goal when he meets Maurice (James Bland), a visitor from New York who’s spending time in the coastal town before starting a long-term nursing program in Angola. The question is whether these two men can make their relationship last, considering all the changes coming up for them regarding location and careers. As they begin to fall for each other, Lourenço also has to deal with unresolved issues from a past relationship, unwanted attention from pushy people, and constant pressure from his mother in Brazil, who doesn’t know he's gay and keeps urging him to find a wife. While writer-director Marco Calvani portrays this tender, genuine same-sex love story with care and understanding, the film tells a story that feels somewhat familiar within LGBTQ+ cinema. It also has difficulty balancing its comedy and drama; both are well done individually, but they often feel too different from each other to blend together smoothly. The movie occasionally tries to cover too much ground as well, including several side stories that could have been cut without hurting the film’s overall impact. Despite these flaws, the filmmakers clearly put their heart into this project, supported by strong performances from the rest of the cast and beautiful visuals highlighting the appeal of this Cape Cod town. Ultimately, “High Tide” is another recent movie that would have benefited from more editing to realize its full promise, particularly given how traditional the basic storyline is. LGBTQ+ films have been evolving in new and exciting ways lately, so filmmakers working with established ideas need to be very sure of what they’re doing if they want to succeed.
