A ridiculous horror-comedy unfolds within an Irish castle facing financial ruin. The owner, portrayed by Peter O'Toole, concocts a scheme to transform his crumbling estate into “Europe’s most haunted castle” hoping to draw in tourists. When the initial wave of visitors arrives for an overnight stay, they quickly discover that the old fortress is genuinely inhabited by ghosts. A sizable ensemble cast joins the proceedings, including Steve Guttenberg, Beverly D'Angelo, Jennifer Tilly, Liam Neeson, Daryl Hannah, and Peter Gallagher. "High Spirits," released in 1988, shares a comedic sensibility with films like "The Fearless Vampire Killers," "The Vampire Happening," “Young Frankenstein,” “Elvira, Mistress of the Dark,” and “Elvira’s Haunted Hills.” It stands among the strongest entries within that particular genre, despite its disappointing performance at theaters. Neil Jordan, the director, has mentioned that the finished film bears little resemblance to his original vision, noting he wasn't involved in the editing of the final version. Beverly D'Angelo and Jennifer Tilly certainly stand out amongst the female performers; however, I feel there was an opportunity to develop their characters further (and I’m not referring to any sort of nudity or overtly suggestive content). Nevertheless, they were utilized effectively enough. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 38 minutes and was filmed at Dromore Castle in County Limerick, Ireland, although portions were also shot on sound stages. GRADE: B
