It turns out “Troy” (Zac Efron) finds himself unexpectedly doing karaoke at a New Year’s Eve celebration alongside "Gabriella" (Vanessa Hudgens). They don’t consider themselves singers, and their initial attempt is rough, but things progress to the point where they discover they attend the same high school and decide to try out for the yearly musical. He's the basketball team captain and a popular guy; she leans more toward academics, particularly math, but they are both set on landing the lead role—a decision that doesn’t please "Sharpay" (Ashley Tisdale) and her brother "Ryan" (Lucas Grabeel), who already have their sights set on it. His friends believe he's embarrassing himself by getting involved with the drama club and plot to discourage them both from competing, using a combination of emotional manipulation and a strategically released video. This seems like it might resolve things, but will our potential "Danny" and "Sandy" be able to pull themselves together and perform—even with a rather quickly and deliberately created conflict in their schedules? I’m hesitant to say this, but even though the main characters had what is considered the best song ("Breaking Free"), I actually thought that the scheming duo performed better! Evans has considerably more musicality than Efron, and neither singing partnership was particularly impressive, really resembling something you might hear at the Eurovision Song Contest. It’s one of those feel-good stories where you just know everything will work out in the end—and for the most part, it is quite cheesy. Fortunately, we get some delightfully exaggerated moments from "Ms. Darbus" (Alyson Reed), which serve as a reminder that it's all meant to be taken lightly, and although I’m not exactly who this movie is aimed at, I didn’t dislike it!
