This new British dystopian drama unfolds within a single forty-story building, focusing on its inhabitants. The film adapts a novel of the same name and features a strong cast and competent production values, though my experience with it was mixed—mostly enjoyable but with some letdowns. Going in completely blind, I was taken by its unfolding narrative; around the midpoint, the central theme became clear. The setting was impressive, and the acting was solid across the board, especially Tom Hiddleston, who is not often seen as a lead. The story centers on a doctor starting a new residency in a high-rise tower and attempting to fit in. As societal collapse threatens civilization, his building suffers severe shortages of supplies, forcing him to confront various dangers from its residents. The remainder of the plot explores how events will resolve, with moments both exhilarating and disheartening. The narrative occasionally ventures outside the building, but these glimpses are brief. Given the number of dystopian films currently being produced, particularly those aimed at younger viewers, this one stands out for its retro feel reminiscent of the seventies and eighties, even though its technology feels contemporary. Not many viewers have embraced it, and I shared that sentiment. It wasn't terrible, but the storyline didn’t quite resonate with audiences in 2016, who are accustomed to more technologically advanced dystopian movies. While it’s refreshing to see a different approach, it falls short of being truly exceptional. Had this film been released in the eighties or fully modernized for today, it might have achieved classic cult status. _6/10_
