It's familiar to see Clint Eastwood portraying a silent, western character wearing a poncho, yet this film possesses an unsettling quality. Upon entering a deserted town, he’s immediately confronted by three troublemakers, whom he quickly defeats. The residents aren't frightened so much as they are impressed, and request that he remain and defend them from another group of three men who have threatened to destroy their community. It seems like the townsfolk could easily have eliminated those riders from their rooftops with rifles; however, this town really belonged in a fairytale setting, necessitating outside assistance. He consents, but sets his own conditions for aiding these people, while we are shown glimpses of a man being viciously whipped by three men in the street. This isn't primarily about an unnamed hero, but rather someone or something distinctly sinister. Is he a man without a soul? He’s not pleasant, decent, or kind; instead, he is as much a brute as those about to attack the town, and so inspires little warmth from those who hired him or viewers watching. We shouldn't trust him or his reasons, and by the powerful ending, we get the feeling that his quest for revenge won’t stop here. As anticipated, it contains violence and bloodshed, and the cast – featuring a memorable performance from Billy Curtis alongside strong turns from Verna Bloom as “Sarah” and Marianna Hill as "Callie," who are given significant parts in the story – contributes to a film that unfolds in a gritty and appropriately conclusive manner. Even now, it’s not suitable for those easily disturbed and is akin to “Unforgiven” within this genre, but it's worth seeing.
