High Flying Bird begins with a scene establishing an unusual premise for a sports movie; both the athlete and his representative are struggling financially because of a lockout, unable even to cover the cost of coffee. It’s surprising to find that this world, often perceived as overflowing with wealth for players and agents, isn't actually like that. The screenplay, written by Tarell Alvin McCraney—who also wrote Moonlight—combined with Steven Soderbergh’s distinctive iPhone-based filmmaking style produces a boardroom drama that is both captivating and informative. What resonated with me was the film's perspective on corporate avarice, the challenges basketball players face in managing their public image, and the pursuit of achievement through unconventional methods. It’s ultimately a well-made movie from a talented team.
