A woman named Yvonne Strahovski takes her two young daughters to a remote Virginia vacation home, but their getaway quickly becomes terrifying. “He’s Out There” (2018) draws inspiration from films like Friday the 13th, though it feels less sensational and more contemporary. The filmmaking is strong in areas like the visuals, sound design, atmosphere, and Strahovski's performance as the central character. The initial setup works well, and the ending has some excitement, but as someone who enjoys this type of movie, I found the middle section to be quite slow because the interactions are mostly between the mother and her daughters—it just isn’t enough. Yvonne does what she can with the material, but the children aren't particularly captivating (which is not unexpected). The story would have benefited from a few extra characters to create more interaction or perhaps replacing the kids with some teenage girls, anything to add something. The movie has a runtime of 1 hour and 29 minutes and was filmed in Lost River, Quebec, located roughly an hour northwest of Montreal. I give it a C-, although my wife thought it deserved a C.
