This film manages to be diverting, though it deviates significantly from the familiar story of Hercules. The promotional material released by Paramount is reasonably upfront in describing it as an altered version of the myth. Typically, marketing materials emphasize the celebrated twelve labors and generally suggest that Hercules embodies a certain heroic ideal. Do not expect that here. A considerable portion of the movie's runtime aims to depict Hercules as an ordinary man—exceptionally strong, certainly, but definitely not a demigod—who essentially fabricated the legend surrounding himself with assistance from his companions. If you’re invested in traditional Greek mythology and dislike reinterpretations, this film will likely disappoint. It’s a standard Hollywood reimagining centered on action sequences, demonstrating little regard for anything else. However, it isn't as disastrous as is often the outcome when Hollywood tackles classical subjects. Hercules and his crew are a rather likable group of tough-edged individuals. The reworked narrative isn't truly awful; naturally simple and predictable—it *is* a Hollywood action movie, after all—but it’s generally effective. As an action film, the primary appeal lies in the action sequences, which are reasonably well done. They are exaggerated, unrealistic, and lack any semblance of genuine military tactics, but they remain enjoyable enough. The person who wrote the scenes depicting Hercules and his friends running through massive battles without much protection while the rest of the army takes cover behind a traditional shield wall isn't particularly bright—militarily or otherwise; that needs to be acknowledged. Still, it does provide Hercules with some opportunities for head-to-head combat. If you appreciate action movies and are willing to switch off your critical thinking skills and simply enjoy the spectacle, this is quite entertaining. That’s my assessment, at least. Some of the scenery is genuinely beautiful, even stunning. The film doesn’t drag, and the acting is appropriate for what it is. I'd characterize it as a slightly better-than-average Hollywood reimagining.
