"Hercules Unchained" (1959) is an Italian, French, and Spanish sword-and-sandal film that follows a similar pattern to Kirk Douglas' "Ulysses" (1954). It’s more of the same story – a heroic figure loses his identity while under the influence of a beautiful woman on an island. “Samson and Delilah” (1949) is considered the high point of this kind of movie. Steve Reeves, known for his physique, portrays Hercules perfectly. He only played the role twice, in this film and "Hercules" (1958). Watching Reeves might even motivate some viewers to get in shape, similar to how Stallone was inspired by Rambo. The story involves Herc being married to Iole (Sylva Koscina), but after drinking a potion he forgets his wife and homeland and becomes captivated by Queen Omphale (Sylvia Lopez) of the isle Lidia. Thus, Hercules finds himself torn between two women: Sylva and Sylvia. "Hercules Unchained" should appeal to both younger viewers and adults; it’s an entertaining fantasy adventure with somewhat dated special effects, but also touches on more complex ideas. One such idea is men's tendency toward pursuing sexual pleasure and their vulnerability to the allure of feminine beauty. Despite being married to Iole (Sylva), Hercules easily falls under Omphale’s (Sylvia) spell, offering a convenient excuse: "I forgot.” Another theme explores how women can wield power for good or ill. Iole (Sylva) uses her charm to find a husband and family with Herc, while Sylvia (Omphale) exploits her feminine influence to capture a string of men, essentially collecting them as trophies. Sylva desires a lasting relationship, but Sylvia is more like a black widow who disposes of her partners once she loses interest. These types of women can be observed in real life. The reviewer recalls one high school acquaintance who would repeatedly find boyfriends, only to cheat on them and move on to the person she was cheating with, eventually replacing that boyfriend; this pattern continued endlessly. She used her feminine wiles to manipulate people, even ruining friendships, leaving men oblivious to her actions because they were too captivated by her charm. Sylva possesses a sweet beauty, while Sylvia has a sharp, striking appearance – both are worth seeing on screen for male viewers. The film also examines the destructive nature of rivalry between siblings vying for power in Thebes; this competition leads to hatred and violence, ultimately resulting in their downfall. Both actors deliver excellent performances, conveying a sense of royal authority. The sets and costumes are well-done. Mario Bava handled the cinematography, special effects, and some directing, giving the film his signature colorful style. Ultimately, if you can accept its dated aspects like the editing, "Hercules Unchained" offers enjoyment on multiple levels. It serves as a clear predecessor to later films such as “Troy” (2004). The movie’s runtime is 1 hour and 37 minutes, although some versions are four minutes shorter; it was filmed at Titanus Studios in Rome, Italy. GRADE: B
