This is certainly among the stronger Disney movies released in the nineties. The storytelling and visuals really take precedence, with the musical numbers playing a smaller role – there aren’t any sweeping, dramatic songs! It offers an enjoyable adaptation of the Greek myths surrounding Hercules. The film opens with a suitably impressive narration from Charlton Heston, who explains that Hades is seeking revenge on Zeus, after Zeus had him ruling the underworld following their victory over the Titans. While Zeus is celebrating the arrival of a new baby boy, Hades plots his retaliation, but his advisors – described as “Fates,” though more like witches of the River Styx – warn him that this infant, Hercules, poses a threat to his plans and must be stopped. Hades manages to strip Hercules of his immortality and power, but will that ultimately prevent our hero from succeeding? It takes a little while to find its rhythm; however, once it does, there are some very good performances from James Woods (who is excellent as Hades), Rip Torn (as Zeus) and Danny DeVito, portraying the perpetually frustrated demigod trainer "Phil," which help propel this fantasy adventure forward. Those hoping for depictions of his twelve labors will be disappointed.
